Not every tile is suitable for outdoor use. Porosity, colour fastness under Queensland's harsh UV, humidity resistance and thermal expansion coefficient all matter when a tile is going to be exposed to the elements year-round. We work with clients to specify tiles that will perform — typically low-porosity porcelain or natural stone that has been tested for outdoor use — and we use flexible exterior adhesive systems rather than standard indoor adhesives that become brittle and delaminate under temperature cycling. The result is an outdoor surface that doesn't lift, crack or discolour within a few seasons.
Slip Ratings and Safety for Wet Outdoor Areas
Any outdoor tiled surface that gets wet — and in Brisbane's storm season that's effectively all of them — needs to meet a minimum slip-resistance rating. Pool surrounds, outdoor showers, alfresco dining areas and balconies that catch rain all fall under the relevant Australian standards for slip resistance. We specify and install tiles with appropriate P-ratings (typically P4 or P5 for pool surrounds and outdoor wet areas), laid in the correct orientation to maximise drainage and grip. Slip-resistant tiling doesn't have to look industrial — there are excellent textured porcelain and natural stone finishes that achieve the right rating while looking as good as their smooth equivalents.
